Yep, It’s still February, and it’s still cold and snowy and miserable. But the 2016 Groundhog predicted and early spring! So in honor of its arrival and our overly enthusiastic preparation. We have a few HVAC specific spring cleaning tips that will help you get the most out of your heating bill as the mercury rises.
Check all the vents:
As winter progresses, we spend more and more time in the house which means more, dirt, more dander and more random socks lying over the heating and cooling vents. As you get ready for Spring to make sure your vents are well dusted, unobstructed and opened correctly. Heating bills are expensive, so why are you wasting your time and money on cooling the backside of a bookshelf, or the underside of a dog bed, let the air do its work.
Take a good hard look at your thermostat.
Changing your thermostat settings once spring arrives may seem like a no-brainer, but it can be a little more complicated than you think. Often we forget that like all things thermostats also need their batteries replaced.Once you have done that, make a summer schedule so that the air conditioner can run at a lower setting when you are not at home and then come on and cool the house an hour before you come home so you can return to a safe, comfortable environment.
Change the Filters
Just like your car, your vacuum cleaner, your sink and many of our other modern appliances. Air conditioners have a filter. As the seasons progress, these filters get clogged with dirt, dander, dust, mold spores, allergens and all kinds of other things we don’t even want to talk about. So as you do your spring cleaning make sure you pick up a new filter at the hardware store for your air conditioner. Not only will this help you breath easier it will keep your AC running even as the pavement shimmers in the heat.
