Change the Filters
Filters must be changed regularly to have a healthy and good Indoor Air Quality at home. The U.S Department of Energy suggests that AC filters should be replaced every month or two as one of your unit’s regular air conditioning service maintenance.
Clean the Condensation Lines
Ensure that the condensation pipes are free from clogs or leaks by checking the pipelines before summer comes. Secure that the condensation line is draining properly to avoid messy problems and big repair bills.
Install a Programmable Thermostat
It is highly suggested to install a smart thermostat if your AC unit doesn’t have it yet. It will provide substantial energy bill savings since it lets you program your thermostat to reduce the AC unit’s usage when you are away at home.
Clean the Coils on the Outside Unit
Although AC’s outside unit was designed to withhold extreme outdoor conditions, it is still important to clear the dust, mud, and other debris in the outside unit. You may use a garden hose to spray down the unit while disconnected from the power source.
Clean the Fins
Fins in the AC’s outside unit must be clean to ensure your AC runs smoothly during hot days. You may use a toothbrush and gently brush it across each fin while avoiding these thin metals to be damaged.
Check the Concrete Slab
Once you’re done cleaning the outside unit of your AC, you better check the concrete slab where your outside unit rests. Use a level to make sure it is at the right level because if not, the unit will have to work hard to cool your house.
Remove Debris around the Outside Unit
Your AC’s outside unit is prone to outdoor elements such as extreme weather conditions, plants and high grasses, insects, and other debris that could hamper your AC unit’s efficiency. Therefore, before summer officially starts, cut and remove the grown-grass and plants in the unit. Also, remove the dried up leaves. During the summer days, do not forget to check the outside unit every month.
Check the Ductwork for Leaks
A leaky duct is one of the leading causes of heating and cooling loss at home. Also, it does not just contribute to heat or cool loss but can also strain your AC unit since it needs to work harder to keep a comfortable temperature at home. You may check for any disconnected joints or small holes in the ductwork.
